Aspiring poets, scrambling scribes, and wandering wordsmiths unite! In this fun, expansive course for students entering grade 6 or 7, students read, discuss, and develop a new understanding of poetry in all of its forms.

Students will strengthen their comprehension and close-reading skills as they engage with a selection of famous poems, from classical sonnets to modern spoken word. By studying these different forms, they will also learn to identify common poetic structures and conventions, such as stanzas, meter, and rhythm.

As they build their poetic vocabulary, students will write and revise their own poems, drawing inspiration from the works they read in class. Students will also train their public speaking skills by memorizing and performing poetry out loud, expressing their meaning to their audience with clear presentation and aural awareness. At the end of the class, students express their voices by performing their own original work in a poetry slam.

This two-week course meets Monday through Friday for three hours each day.

Space is very limited for our summer programs. Please do not wait until the last minute to enroll. If there are more than two weeks before the course starts, a $200 deposit will be due when enrolling, with the balance due two weeks before the course begins.

Our family regularly talks about AoPS. We try to think about how our life would be different without you all. What if my daughter hadn't learned to love math? What if she never experienced being pushed to her limits? Overcoming failure? She wouldn't be who she is. And she is AWESOME! A very proud mom here. We are so fortunate that we found AoPS Academy. I credit AoPS for much of her confidence.
